Belline oracle

The Belline oracle is a French oracle deck of 53 cards created in the 19th century, attributed to the magus Edmond and rediscovered by Mage Belline in 1961. It is one of the most popular oracles in the French divinatory tradition, especially valued for its precision in love and money matters.

Origin and history

The Belline oracle originated in 1840s Paris, attributed to the famous magus Edmond Billaudot (Mage Edmond), one of the most celebrated cartomancers of the 19th century, consultant to George Sand, Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo. The original cards were presumed lost after Edmond's death — until 1961, when the cartomancer Mage Belline (Marcel Belline) rediscovered them and published them with his own commentary, giving them his name.

The deck has 53 numbered cards. Each one combines: a number, a celestial body or symbolic element (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, plus other archetypes), and a specific situation (love, money, work, illness, journey, news, etc.). The cards are simple visually — no figures, only symbol + word — but their interpretation is dense and rich.

Structure and use

The 53 cards group themselves around 7 planetary archetypes (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) plus various themes. There are positive cards (Le Bonheur = Happiness, Le Mariage = Marriage, Les Cadeaux = Gifts), neutral ones (La Lettre = The Letter, Le Voyage = The Journey) and challenging ones (La Trahison = Betrayal, La Maladie = Illness, Les Larmes = Tears).

It is read in spreads of 3, 5 or 7 cards typically, though there are also more complex spreads of 13 or 21 cards. Belline is a concrete and direct oracle: it does not philosophise, it answers. That is why it is appreciated for daily questions about specific topics: relationships, money, work, health. Less mystical than the tarot, more practical and operative.

How to use it

The Belline oracle is suitable for specific and concrete questions. It is not used for spiritual or vital reflections: for that the tarot is better. For "will my business prosper?" or "how will my new relationship evolve?", Belline excels. Many French cartomancers combine Belline with the tarot: tarot for the deep meaning, Belline for the practical detail.
