What Are Oracles and How Do They Work?

An oracle is any system or medium used to obtain answers or guidance from higher forces, the unconscious or the universe. Since antiquity, every culture has developed its own oracular systems: the Greeks consulted the Oracle of Delphi, the Chinese the I Ching, the Celts the runes, and Africans the dilogún with cowrie shells.

The difference between an oracle and the tarot is that oracles tend to be more direct and intuitive. They lack tarot's elaborate 78-card symbolic system and answer the question more concretely. They are complementary tools that many practitioners use together.

The I Ching: The Oldest Oracle

The I Ching or Book of Changes has more than 3,000 years of history. It is based on 64 hexagrams formed by yang (continuous) and yin (broken) lines representing every possible state of change and transformation. Each hexagram's interpretation offers a philosophical and practical perspective on the situation consulted.
