Mayan solar seal
A Mayan solar seal is each one of the 20 day-signs (or nahuales) of the sacred Mayan calendar Tzolkin. Combined with the 13 numerical "tones" produces the 260 unique kines of the calendar. Each solar seal carries specific energy of personality, spiritual gifts and life lessons. In modern Mayan astrology it is what corresponds to your "day-sign of birth".
The 20 solar seals
The 20 solar seals are: 1) Imix (Cocodrile, primordial water energy, original mother). 2) Ik (Wind, divine breath, communication, spirit). 3) Akbal (Night, deep unconscious, dream, mystery). 4) Kan (Seed/Maize, fertility, creativity, growth). 5) Chikchan (Snake, vital instinct, kundalini energy, transformation). 6) Kimi (Death, transformation, surrender, transition). 7) Manik (Deer, harmony, healing, sacred service). 8) Lamat (Rabbit/Star, abundance, magic, beauty). 9) Muluk (Water, emotions, purification, lunar energy). 10) Ok (Dog, loyalty, animal guide, unconditional love).
11) Chuwen (Monkey, art, child play, creative expression). 12) Eb (Path, vital journey, destiny, ascending stairs). 13) Ben (Reed/Maize, growth, agricultural patience, sustained connection earth-sky). 14) Ix (Jaguar, magic, feminine power, forest mystery). 15) Men (Eagle, elevated vision, freedom, broad consciousness). 16) Kib (Vulture/Wisdom, knowledge of ancient warriors, ancestral wisdom). 17) Kaban (Earth, grounding, terrestrial connection, sustained navigation). 18) Etznab (Obsidian/Mirror, mirror of two truths, justice, discernment). 19) Kawak (Storm, transformative energy, sudden purification). 20) Ajaw (Sun, full sovereignty, total consciousness, royalty).
Each solar seal in detail
Each solar seal has rich symbolism that includes: 1) Predominant personality traits of those born under that energy. 2) Specific spiritual gifts (vocations and natural talents). 3) Lessons typical to learn through this energy. 4) Compatibilities and incompatibilities with other solar seals. 5) Body parts associated. 6) Specific Mayan deities. 7) Sacred colours. The full mastery of each seal is part of the deep ancestral Mayan tradition that the ajq'ij (Mayan elders, especially of the Quiché Maya communities of Guatemala) preserve and transmit.
Brief examples: Ajaw (Sun) — natural leadership, royal solar consciousness, irradiates light to others; lesson: not abusing personal power. Imix (Cocodrile) — mother primordial energy, sustained generative creativity, deep trust; lesson: not clinging excessively, learning to release. Ix (Jaguar) — silent feminine magic, intuitive ability, vision in the darkness; lesson: not isolating, sharing the magic with the community. Etznab (Obsidian) — sharp truth, justice without complacency, discernment; lesson: balancing severity with compassion.
Discovering your solar seal
1) Calculate your Mayan kin (which combines your solar seal + numerical tone of 1-13) using an online conversion tool from Gregorian date to Tzolkin (free; tzolkin.online, maya.com, etc.). 2) Identify your specific solar seal (one of the 20). 3) Read the deep description of your seal — preferably from authentic Mayan sources, not New Age popularisations. 4) If the energy resonates with you, integrate it into your meditative-spiritual practice. 5) Each day has its current solar seal — you can pay attention to the energy of the current day and align activities with it (e.g.: days Kan good for planting, days Ok good for honouring loved ones, days Etznab for important difficult decisions). 6) For deep work, contact authentic Mayan teachers (ajq'ij) — there are reputable ones in Guatemala and increasingly in international contexts.
