Saturn

Saturn is the sixth planet of the solar system and, in traditional astrology, ruler of Capricorn (and traditionally of Aquarius). It represents discipline, time, structure, responsibility, limits and maturity. It is the traditional "great malefic", but also the great teacher of karma.

Origin and etymology

The name Saturn comes from the Latin Saturnus, Roman god of agriculture, time and sowing. His Greek equivalent is Cronos, father of Zeus, Hera, Poseidon and other Olympians, known for devouring his own children to avoid being dethroned by them (time devouring what it creates). Saturn's astrological symbol represents the scythe: harvest instrument and, in mythology, the weapon with which Cronos castrated Uranus.

In classical astrology, Saturn was the "great malefic": the most distant planet visible to the naked eye, cold, slow (29 years to traverse the zodiac), associated with obstacles, tests, limitations, old age and death. But its bad reputation is only half the truth: Saturn is also the teacher who instructs through testing, who structures character, who rewards discipline with deep wisdom.

What Saturn rules

Saturn represents structure and necessary limits: the body's skeleton, bones, teeth, skin; the father, authority, norms; time, long-term consequences; discipline, responsibility, duty. Where Saturn touches your chart, those are your areas of testing and mastery: it costs more at first, but perseverance produces deep wisdom.

Saturn takes approximately 29 years to traverse the zodiac. Its most famous transit is the "Saturn return" (when it returns to its natal position around age 28-30): a period of 2-3 years of deep vital review, where what is not authentic tends to collapse so the true can be built. The second return (around 58-60) marks another important vital review. Its transits always demand adulthood.

Saturn in your chart

Look at the sign and house of your natal Saturn. Sign: how you handle duty and limits (Saturn in Aries: hard to start; Saturn in Cancer: emotional difficulty with family). House: in which area of life you have tests and mastery (Saturn in House II = you learn through money; House VII = relationships are your test; House X = profession demands everything from you). The Saturn return at 29 is one of the most studied milestones of astrology.
