Capricorn

Origin and etymology

The name Capricorn is Latin and means "horn of goat". The traditional symbol combines goat and fish-tail, a hybrid figure inherited from Sumerian-Babylonian mythology where it represented Enki/Ea, god of the deep waters and wisdom. The Greeks identified the figure with Pan, the pastoral god, transformed half goat half fish when he plunged into the Nile fleeing the monster Typhon.

Capricorn initiates the Northern Hemisphere winter with the solstice of 21-22 December, the shortest day of the year. That is why it is an Earth sign of withdrawal: the outer contracts, nature concentrates. Its energy is that of one who endures, plans, perseveres. The goat that climbs the mountain is its best-known symbol: step by step, without haste but without pause.

Capricornian archetype

Capricorn is the strategist and long-term builder. It contributes discipline, patience, sustained ambition, sense of responsibility, leadership ability from earned (not imposed) authority. It is the sign that understands time: it knows great things require decades. Its opposite sign is Cancer: if Cancer is the emotional-domestic self, Capricorn is the public-professional self.

In shadow: Capricorn can fall into coldness, ambition without ethics, chronic pessimism, sacrificing the affective for the material. The Capricornian trap is to work so hard that no time remains for what work should sustain (family, health, joy). Its karmic lesson is to learn that success without affection is not success.
