Secondary progressions

The secondary progressions are an astrological predictive technique that "projects" the natal chart forward in time following the rule "one day after birth = one year of life". So the planetary positions of, for example, the 30th day after your birth describe your astrological energy at age 30. Combined with transits, are two of the most used predictive techniques in modern Western astrology.

Origin and theoretical foundation

The technique of secondary progressions was developed in medieval and Renaissance European astrology, with theoretical roots in the classical Ptolemaic astrology of the 2nd century AD. Its theoretical premise: there is a "symbolic correspondence" between the days that follow birth and the years of life. Although there is no obvious physical-causal mechanism for this correspondence, astrologers have observed empirically that the predictive correlations of the progressions tend to work — that is, important moments in the life of the consultant frequently coincide with significant progressed planetary positions.

Variants of the technique: 1) Secondary progressions (the most popular: 1 day after birth = 1 year of life). 2) Solar progressions / arc progressions (each year all the planets advance the same amount as the Sun advances in one year — approximately 1° per year). 3) Solar return (a different chart calculated for the exact moment when the Sun returns to its original natal position — annual; sometimes also calculated for Lunar Return, monthly). 4) Tertiary progressions (1 lunar month = 1 month of life — less used).

How they are used

In a typical predictive astrology consultation, the experienced astrologer studies: 1) Natal chart (the basis: who you are, what you came with). 2) Current transits (where the planets are NOW in real sky and how they aspect your natal chart). 3) Secondary progressions (where the symbolic position of your "natal chart slowly advancing" is for your current age). 4) Solar return (chart for your last/next birthday). 5) Significant approaching aspects in any of the previous calculations.

Practical example: progressed Sun changes sign approximately every 30 years (since it advances 1° per year, and each sign is 30°). When the progressed Sun changes sign, the consultant typically experiences a significant identity-vital change — entry to new chapter of life. The famous "Saturn return" at age 28-30 (when natal Saturn returns to its original position, by ~29.5-year orbital cycle) is one of the best-known predictive moments — typically marks an important transition (closing of late youth, entry into mature adulthood). Progressed lunation (when progressed Moon returns to phase analogue with progressed Sun) marks 27-29-year cycles of completed maturation.

Use today

For practical predictive astrology, you can: 1) Use online software (Astro.com, Astrodienst, Solar Fire) that calculates your progressions automatically — already integrated in any decent online tool. 2) Consult experienced predictive astrologer to interpret what these progressions and transits mean for your current life. 3) If you study astrology yourself, recommended manuals: Predictive Astrology of Bernadette Brady; Planets in Transit of Robert Hand. The predictive astrology is more delicate than the natal: requires sustained study and deeply mature interpretation. Important: the predictions are orientations, not closed destinies. Free will remains operative — but knowing the "energetic weather" of the period helps make wiser decisions.
