Square

The square is the astrological aspect of 90°: two planets in signs of the same polar element but different modality. It generates active tension, chronic friction and challenges that force growth. It is the most demanding aspect of astrological tarot, but also the most fertile for character development.

Origin and technique

The square is one of the five major aspects codified by Ptolemy. Its orb is generally ±6 to ±8 degrees. Geometrically, it divides the zodiacal circle into four equal parts (hence the name, from the Latin quadratus, "square"). Signs in square share modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) but belong to elements in tension.

Examples: Aries (cardinal Fire) in square with Cancer (cardinal Water) — Fire and Water neutralise each other. Taurus (fixed Earth) in square with Leo (fixed Fire) — Earth and Fire can compact but do not flow. The square indicates an active conflict the person cannot ignore: it asks for action, decision, integration. It leaves no room for passivity.

How it manifests

A person with Sun-Saturn square lives constant tension between the impulse to shine (Sun) and a sense of duty or limitation (Saturn). This may generate self-criticism, sense of huge effort, late adult vocation. Moon-Mars square: explosive emotions, difficulty regulating anger. Venus-Saturn square: love with weight, difficulty enjoying without guilt.

The square is the engine of growth. Natal charts without squares are usually those of talented people but without great inner motivation to develop: life does not force them. Squares force one to forge character, take on the difficult, transform friction into achievement. As the astrologer Liz Greene said: "tense aspects are Saturn's gifts disguised as a problem".
