Lychnomancy
Lychnomancy (or candle reading) is the divinatory and ritual art of interpreting the behaviour of a candle while it burns: the dance of the flame, the way the wax melts, the soot it produces, the noise of the wick. Used both as an oracle and as feedback in magical and energetic ceremonial.
Ancient origin
Reading the flame and the smoke from the candle is an extension of the older capnomancy (smoke divination) and pyromancy (fire divination). It is documented in ancient Greece, where the Delphic oracles included flame observation; in Rome, where the candles of the temples were observed; and in folk medieval and early modern Europe.
In modern Hispanic and Caribbean popular tradition, lychnomancy survives associated with rituals of cleansing, protection, request to saints and Santería. Many people who light a candle to a saint or the Virgin observe its behaviour and interpret. The practice continues alive without it being called by name: it is part of the daily devotional and magical culture.
Signs interpreted
The flame: tall and stable = strong intention well received, energy flowing. Low and weak = blockage, insufficient energy. Dancing erratically = perturbation, agitated energies around the situation. Splits in two = duality, two paths, conflict between forces. Goes out alone = closure, refusal of the spirit world, or completed work.
The wax: melts evenly = clear path, intention well directed. Drips a lot = many tears or charge in the situation. Forms specific shapes (figures of animals, people, objects) = symbolic message visible — they are "read" iconographically. Coloured wax that changes tone (clear pearl turns greyish or yellowish) indicates absorption of heavy energies.
The wick: large flowering on the wick (red ember) = open energy, response from the spirit. Black soot accumulating = absorption of negative energy (the candle is "doing its work" of cleansing). Loud crackling = important verbal or energetic message coming. Strange smell that is not the natural one of the wax = entity present.
How to use it
Lychnomancy works best in a calm and ritual environment: clean space, set intention, formulated prayer or specific question, candle of suitable colour (white for general purposes; colour according to the matter — red love, green money, yellow studies, etc.). Light, observe at least the first 5-10 minutes carefully and note what happens. Many readers also observe the result at the end of the candle: how it has burnt, what remains of wax, and what the residue looks like.
