Capnomancy

Origin

The word "capnomancy" comes from the Greek kapnós ("smoke") and manteia ("divination"). The practice is documented in ancient Greece, especially among the priestesses of Delphi, who interpreted the rising smoke from their burning offerings to Apollo. Also among the Persians, the Egyptians, and in pre-Columbian American traditions (Maya, Aztec) where copal smoke was the divinatory channel par excellence.

In medieval Europe and modern Spain, the smoke from candles and incense at home or in church kept popular interpretations alive: "the smoke goes up straight = good intention received", "the smoke spreads sideways = obstacle", "the smoke is dark = something heavy". The practice survives, often without people knowing its name, in traditional rituals of ritual smudging, brews and palo santo cleansings.

How smoke is read

Capnomancy reads several variables of the smoke: colour (white = pure intention received; grey = unclear question; dark = heavy energy or interference; bluish = spiritual presence), direction (straight up = clear yes; sideways = delays; downwards = blockage), density (thin and tenuous = quick result; dense and thick = something powerful in formation), shape (spirals = energy in motion; figures perceived in the smoke = visual messages).

A particular technique, modern, is candle smoke reading: it consists of holding a white plate or paper close to the candle flame so that the smoke from the wick deposits soot on the surface. The figures formed in the soot are then interpreted as if they were Rorschach images. It is more iconographic than directional capnomancy.

Sacred ritual context

Capnomancy is not done as a "casual oracle". It is a ritual practice of high spiritual concentration: incense lit, sacred space, formulated question, focused attention. The smoke is the visible bridge between the physical world and the energetic. Its movement is read as the breath of the spiritual world responding. Many cleansing and protection rituals use capnomancy in passing: how the smoke is dispersed indicates the energy of the space being purified.
