Judgement
Judgement is major arcanum XX of the tarot. It represents awakening, the spiritual call, the rebirth of what seemed dead, the vital decision taken and the final integration of the initiatic process. Associated with the Fire element, it embodies the moment when the soul recognises itself and responds.
Origin and symbolism
In traditional decks, Judgement shows the archangel Gabriel (or an anonymous angel) blowing a trumpet over human figures rising from their tombs with arms uplifted. The iconography is directly medieval Christian: the Day of Final Judgement, the dead resurrect, souls are called to their destiny. The tarot card preserves the scene but gives it a more universal sense: the call, the awakening, the conscious response.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith, the figures rising from the tombs have their arms open in cross: they are willing to receive what comes, they do not resist. The angel above carries a banner with red cross on white background (resurrectional symbols). The card does not judge morally — it announces the moment when something in you awakens and responds to a deep call.
Meaning in a spread
Appearance in a reading: spiritual awakening, vocational call, moment of inner response, rebirth after a period of lethargy, vital decision taken, second chance, integration of what has been learned, forgiveness, closure of a long process. It is the card of initiation: something ends and something is born simultaneously. It asks to respond bravely to the inner voice.
In shadow: destructive self-criticism, judging others harshly, not responding to the call out of fear, living with unresolved remorse, passive waiting for "destiny". Judgement's trap is to confuse the call with guilt, or the decision with self-condemnation.
