Temperance
Temperance is major arcanum XIV of the tarot. It represents alchemical balance, integration of opposites, moderation and the fluidity of the inner process. Associated with Sagittarius, it embodies the angel who blends the waters of the material and the spiritual.
Origin and symbolism
In traditional decks, Temperance shows an angel with two vessels, pouring liquid from one to the other without spilling. In the Rider-Waite-Smith, the angel has one foot on the earth and the other on water (integration of the material and the emotional), an iris flower in the background (symbol of the rainbow, messenger between worlds) and a sun with a triangle on the forehead (divine alchemy).
The blending of waters between the two vessels is the symbolic heart of the card: solve et coagula, the alchemical principle of "dissolve and coagulate". The angel mixes without losing anything — dynamic balance, not static. The card is a direct heir of medieval and Renaissance alchemical images, and many esotericists consider it the highest representation of the individuation process.
Meaning in a spread
Appearance in a reading: balance, patience, wisely blend opposites, moderation, finding the middle way, gradual healing, integration of contrary parts, inner alchemy, fluidity of the process. Temperance is the most diplomatic arcanum: it indicates the solution is not in one extreme or the other, but in the right mixture. It asks for patience: things cook slowly.
In shadow: indecision from fear of committing to an extreme, forced mixture that does not flow, stagnation under appearance of balance, avoiding taking a position. Temperance's trap is to confuse balance with lukewarmness: the right mixture requires knowledge, not cowardly neutrality.
