Amulet

An amulet is an object — natural or manufactured — that is worn close to the body or placed in spaces with the intention of protecting against negative energies, dangers or evil. Differs from the talisman (which seeks to attract specific positive influences) by its primarily defensive function.

Etymology and history

The word "amulet" derives from the Latin amuletum, possibly related to amoliri ("to remove, to ward off"): something that wards off evil. Pliny the Elder mentions amulets in his Naturalis Historia (1st century AD) as common practice in Rome. But the concept is much older: amulets are documented in ancient Egypt (the famous scarab against death, ankh for life, eye of Horus for protection), Mesopotamia, biblical world, and ALL traditional cultures of the planet.

In the Hispanic and Latin American popular tradition survive many amulets: the fig (closed fist with the thumb between the index and middle finger — protection against the evil eye), the red coral (specific against the evil eye for children), the ojo turco (Turkish eye, very widespread today by cultural adoption), the ferradura (horseshoe at the entrance of the door), the ajo (garlic against witchcraft), the medallion of the patron saint or virgin. Each region has its own.

Types of amulet

Natural amulets: parts of plants (rue, basil, aromatic herbs), stones (jet, onyx, obsidian — protective stones), animal parts (rabbit foot, animal teeth — though contemporary tradition prefers ethical and synthetic options), salt, palo santo. Manufactured amulets: religious symbols (cross, Hand of Fatima, Star of David, Buddhist symbols), specific figures (Turkish eye, pentagram, ankh), engraved metals.

For an amulet to "work", traditions agree that it must be activated and personalised: cleansed of previous energies (with smoke, salt, moon water), consecrated with intention (prayer, ritual, expressed wish), connected with the bearer (carry it close to the body for several days, sleep with it). An amulet bought as decoration without ritual treatment is, for esoteric traditions, just an inert object.

Choosing your amulet

Important guidelines: 1) choose an amulet that resonates with you — that has personal meaning, that comes from a tradition you respect, that you do not feel as cultural appropriation. 2) Cleanse it before using it. 3) Activate it with clear intention. 4) Wear it consistently for the protective work to deepen. 5) Periodically cleanse it (it absorbs energies that need to be discharged). 6) Do not abuse the use of multiple amulets simultaneously: one or two well chosen and well loaded are more effective than many superficially.
