Incense

Incense is an aromatic substance — natural or compound — that, when burned, releases ritual perfumed smoke. Used in spiritual, religious and esoteric practices of all cultures of the world for thousands of years: to purify spaces, attract specific energies, accompany prayers and rituals, and communicate with the divine.

Universal origin

The word "incienso" (incense) comes from the Latin incensum ("that which is set on fire"). The use of aromatic ritual smokes is documented in all great human civilisations: ancient Egypt (myrrh, frankincense, kyphi — sacred Egyptian compound), Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome (used in temples and homes), Israel (Levitical ritual incense in the Jerusalem Temple), India (sandalwood, traditional Hindu incense), China (medicinal-spiritual incense, religious Buddhist), Japan (way of incense or kōdō), pre-Columbian Americas (copal, palo santo, sweetgrass), African traditions (myrrh, frankincense, benzoin).

Each tradition developed its specific incenses with specific spiritual purposes. The major civilisations exchanged incenses through commercial routes — the famous incense road connected Arabia (frankincense, myrrh) with Egypt and the Mediterranean, an enormously valuable economic activity for centuries.

Main types and uses

Frankincense (olíbano): resin of Boswellia, considered the king of religious incenses. Cleanses spaces, elevates vibration, accompanies prayer and meditation. Used in Christianity, Judaism, Islam. Myrrh: resin of Commiphora, complementary to frankincense. Of more terrestrial vibration, useful for grounding and healing. Sandalwood: tropical wood with sweet aroma, calming. Hindu and Buddhist tradition. Copal: Mesoamerican resin (Mexico, Central America), of intense pre-Columbian use. Powerful spiritual cleansing, ancestral connection.

Palo santo: sacred wood of Bursera graveolens (Andes, Amazon). Powerful energetic cleansing, attraction of positive energies. White sage: Native American tradition (American sage), profound cleansing of spaces and people. Lavender: relaxing, attracts peace and feminine energy. Pine and rosemary: protection. Patchouli: prosperity, sensuality, grounding. Each one for a specific intention.

Conscious use

For ritual use: 1) choose the appropriate incense for the intention (cleansing, attraction, protection, meditation, etc.). 2) Light it formally (not as ambient air freshener) with conscious presence. 3) Walk through the space taking the smoke to all corners, especially corners and dark areas. 4) Open windows after to let go the absorbed energies (essential for cleansings). 5) Use natural quality incense — many synthetic incenses contain artificial chemicals that are NOT for health and have no real ritual effect. 6) Be careful with respiratory health: ventilate well, do not use excessively. 7) Respect indigenous traditions if you use specific incenses (palo santo, copal, white sage) — buy them ethically and use them with reverence.
