Aquarius

Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the Western zodiac (21 January – 19 February), Air element and Fixed modality, traditionally ruled by Saturn and modernly by Uranus. Archetype of the visionary, the rebel and the social reformer.

Origin and etymology

The name Aquarius comes from the Latin aquarius ("water-bearer"), translating the Greek Hydrochoos. The constellation was associated in antiquity with the mythological figure of Ganymede, cup-bearer to the Olympian gods, abducted by Zeus to serve nectar on Olympus. In Babylonian astrology, the sign was associated with the annual flooding of the Euphrates in deep winter: the "season of water".

Although its symbol is the water-bearer, Aquarius is an Air sign in the zodiacal tradition — not Water. The paradox resolves symbolically: the water poured by the bearer is not physical water but knowledge, inspiration and information flowing toward humanity. Aquarius distributes; it does not contain.

Aquarian archetype

Aquarius is the social visionary: it thinks in terms of humanity, community, future. It contributes mental independence, originality, the ability to see what others cannot yet see. Great reformers, disruptive scientists and revolutionaries often have a marked Aquarius in their chart. Its opposite and complementary sign is Leo: if Leo is the radiant self, Aquarius is the connected we.

In shadow: Aquarius can fall into emotional coldness, intellectualised distance, gratuitous rebellion, inability to commit in intimacy out of fear of losing freedom. The Aquarian trap is loving humanity in the abstract while ignoring the specific people close to you.

Aquarius in your chart

If your Sun is in Aquarius, your conscious identity seeks freedom, originality and collective contribution. If your Moon is in Aquarius, you need spaces of emotional independence to be well. If your ascendant is Aquarius, you give a first impression of an unusual, mentally quick, distinct person. The natal chart integrates all positions for a complete portrait.
