Origin in the system

The fixed signs occupy the central month of each astronomical season: Taurus in the middle of spring, Leo in the middle of summer, Scorpio in the middle of autumn, Aquarius in the middle of winter. By the time each fixed sign arrives, the season is already fully established — not at its beginning (cardinal) nor at its dissolution (mutable). It is the plenitude of each season.

The four fixed signs are also the four creatures of the vision of Ezekiel (Old Testament) and the four evangelists in Christian tradition: Taurus = bull (Saint Luke), Leo = lion (Saint Mark), Scorpio = eagle (Saint John — though now scorpion is its primary symbol), Aquarius = man (Saint Matthew). They appear in the corners of the major arcanum The World of the tarot, and represent the four pillars of the universe — the fixed structure that supports everything.

The four fixed signs

Taurus (fixed earth): sustained material stability, sensual enjoyment, slow but persistent constancy, value of effort, fertility cultivated with patience. Leo (fixed fire): sustained creativity, faithful and durable love, royal authority, magnetic radiance, courage that does not fade with circumstances. Scorpio (fixed water): deep emotion that does not change easily, intense and prolonged loves, sustained transformative loyalty, also persistent grudges if unresolved. Aquarius (fixed air): ideas held over years, social ideals defended without fading, intellectual independence sustained, friendship of long duration.

The fixed energy in shadow manifests as: extreme stubbornness (refusing to change opinion even with evidence to the contrary), resistance to necessary change, rooted grudges, routine without reflection, refusal of vulnerability and risk. The integrated fixed energy combines stability with capacity to evolve when truly necessary — which often requires complementing with mutable energy of other planets to maintain healthy flexibility.

Fixed energy in your chart

Count how many planets have you in fixed signs. Many fixed planets (5+) indicates very stable, persistent personality, capable of sustaining commitments and projects throughout time — but possibly with rigidity in the face of necessary changes. Few fixed planets (0-2) indicates personality more changing, less naturally stable — you may need to consciously cultivate persistence or work in environments where varied flexibility serves rather than disturbs. The harmonic combination of the three modalities is key for psychic balance.
