What is the Personality Number?

In Pythagorean numerology —the most widely used in the West— each letter of the alphabet has a numerical value from 1 to 9. By adding all the consonants of your full name (first name + surnames) and reducing to a single digit (or master number 11/22/33), you obtain your personality number. It is one of the five key numbers in your numerological portrait.

Unlike the destiny number (calculated from your date of birth) or the motivations number (calculated from the vowels of your name), the personality number describes specifically how others perceive you. It is the first layer of your numerological identity.

How is it calculated exactly?
You assign each consonant of your full name its numerical value (A=1, B=2, C=3,… J=1, K=2,… S=1, T=2…). Sum them all, then reduce the result to a single digit (unless it comes to 11, 22 or 33 — master numbers that are kept as-is). For example, MARY: only M(4)+R(9) = 13 = 1+3 = 4. Which name do I use — my legal name or the one people call me?
The most recommended is the full legal name at birth (the one on your official documents). That is the one that carries "karmic" weight according to the tradition. If you have legally changed your name, both calculations are interesting: the original and the current one. If the current name differs significantly, that change itself transforms how you present yourself to the world.
How does it differ from the astrological sun sign?
The sun sign describes your essential identity according to the stars; the personality number describes your outer image according to the letters of your name. They are different but complementary systems: if both point to the same keys, the signal is very strong.
Does it work with compound surnames or foreign names?
Yes. Pythagorean numerology uses the standard Latin alphabet; any name written in the Latin alphabet can be calculated. For names in Cyrillic, Arabic, Japanese and other scripts, specific numerologies exist (Hebrew Kabbalah, Japanese kotodama…). This app works with the Latin alphabet.
