Karmic astrology

Karmic astrology is the branch of astrology that interprets the natal chart as a map of unfinished business of past lives and the lessons the soul has come to learn in this incarnation. Especially focuses on the lunar nodes, retrograde planets, and significant aspects of Saturn, Pluto and the South Node.

Origin and theoretical foundation

Karmic astrology is born from the synthesis of Western astrology with the Hindu-Buddhist concept of karma and reincarnation. It was developed mainly in the 20th century by authors such as Martin Schulman (his Karmic Astrology series of the 1970s is foundational), Jan Spiller, Donna Cunningham, who systematised the karmic reading of the natal chart.

Its theoretical premise: the soul reincarnates many times to learn specific lessons. Each life chooses circumstances that bring it the right opportunities. The natal chart of this life reflects the karmic load brought from previous incarnations AND the path that the soul has chosen to walk for its evolution. Reading the chart with karmic eyes is recovering the memory of why you chose this life.

Key elements

Lunar nodes are the most important: the South Node indicates what the soul brings already mastered from past lives (its comfort zone — but also its trap if it stagnates there); the North Node indicates the new direction the soul has come to learn (uncomfortable but evolutionary). They form an exact axis: development consists in integrating both, not abandoning the south, but rather building on it towards the north.

Saturn describes the karmic responsibilities and structural lessons the soul brings — its location by sign and house indicates which area of life requires patient and disciplined work. Pluto describes deep transformations the soul has come to traverse — radical encounters with own power, with deep losses, with rebirths.

Retrograde planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn retrograde at birth) indicate areas where the soul brings unfinished business to be reviewed: the energy of the retrograde planet does not flow naturally in this life, until the karmic lessons of past lives are integrated.

How to read your karma

For an introductory karmic reading: 1) Locate your South Node (sign and house) — that is what your soul masters from before, your inner safety. 2) Locate your North Node (sign and house, exactly opposite to South) — that is the path you have come to walk. 3) Saturn (sign, house, aspects) — main karmic responsibilities. 4) Retrograde planets — pending revisions. 5) Hard aspects (squares, oppositions) of Saturn or Pluto with personal planets — points of conscious karmic work. The reading does not predict closed destiny — it reveals priority work agenda for this life.
