Lunar eclipse
A lunar eclipse is the astronomical phenomenon in which Earth interposes between the Sun and the Moon during a full moon, casting its shadow over the satellite. The Moon takes on a characteristic reddish colour ("blood moon"). Astrologically, lunar eclipses mark important karmic endings and emotional revelations.
Astronomical and symbolic origin
Astronomically, a lunar eclipse occurs only at full moon, when Sun-Earth-Moon are perfectly aligned. Earth's shadow covers the Moon partially or totally. They happen 2-4 times a year, generally in pairs with solar eclipses (each lunar eclipse is preceded or followed by a solar eclipse two weeks apart).
In classical astrology, eclipses were considered powerful omens. Babylonians, Greeks and Romans followed eclipses with attention: they marked changes of era, ends of reigns, beginnings of revolutions. Contemporary astrology softens the drama but keeps the idea: eclipses are karmic accelerators, moments when destiny moves faster than usual.
Astrological meaning
A lunar eclipse is a powered-up full moon: what the full moon would do gently (reveal, culminate, release emotions), the eclipse does suddenly. It marks emotional endings: relationships that end, stages that close, truths that come to the surface. Significant events usually occur 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the eclipse, within the themes of the sign where it happens.
Eclipses move in 18-year cycles (saros): each eclipse series affects the same pairs of signs for years in a row. If a lunar eclipse coincides with important planets in your natal chart (especially Sun, Moon, ascendant or midheaven), its impact on your life will be greater. Classical astrology recommends not signing important contracts or starting big projects in the shadow of an eclipse — wait two weeks.
How to navigate it
Lunar eclipse days are best for reduced activity, rest, time for introspection. Emotions may be more on the surface; it is not the time for important arguments. If something ends in this period, almost always it is something that already had its cycle complete: the eclipse accelerates what was pending, it does not invent ruptures. Trust what leaves. What survives the eclipse, survives because it has solid foundation.
