Solar eclipse

A solar eclipse is the astronomical phenomenon in which the Moon interposes between the Sun and Earth during a new moon, partially or totally hiding the solar disc. Astrologically, solar eclipses mark important karmic beginnings, seeds planted with unusual force for the next six months.

Astronomical and symbolic origin

A solar eclipse occurs only at new moon, when Sun-Moon-Earth are perfectly aligned. The Moon, much smaller than the Sun, is yet much closer to us: by cosmic coincidence, its apparent size is almost identical to that of the Sun, which produces the spectacle of a total eclipse. They happen 2-5 times a year, generally in pairs with lunar eclipses.

In classical astrology, solar eclipses were considered the most powerful omens. When the Sun — king star, source of all light — was temporarily darkened, ancient civilisations prepared for great changes. Kings consulted astrologers tirelessly. Modern astrology keeps the respect: solar eclipses are karmic portals, moments when things are sown that yield for six months, until the next eclipse.

Astrological meaning

A solar eclipse is a powered-up new moon: what the new moon would do gently (sow, begin, plant intentions), the solar eclipse does with extraordinary force. It marks new karmic beginnings: unexpected opportunities, decisions that change the course, beginnings with weight beyond the ordinary. What is initiated in solar eclipse tends to have lasting effect — for better or worse.

Solar eclipses activate the themes of the sign where they occur and of the corresponding house in your natal chart. If the eclipse falls on a personal planet of yours (especially natal Sun or Moon), or on the ascendant, its impact will be personal and notable. They tend to produce significant events around the eclipse — two weeks before, or up to six months later within the same theme.

How to navigate it

Classical astrologers recommend not acting on the exact day of the eclipse: the energy is too intense and chaotic. Wait 2-3 days afterwards and observe what themes emerge. If something new suddenly appears in your life around the eclipse (job offer, important encounter, decision that imposes itself), it may be a karmic seed worthy of careful attention. What arrives in eclipse usually has long reach.
