Full moon

The full moon is the phase of the lunar cycle when the Moon is fully illuminated by the Sun and appears as a round disc in the night sky. Astronomically, it occurs when the Sun and Moon are in exact opposition (180°) from Earth's perspective. It happens approximately every 29.5 days.

Origin and symbolism

In all ancient cultures, the full moon had ritual importance: it marked festivities, harvests, sacred cycles and moments of high emotional charge. The Celts celebrated the Esbat of the full moon; the Chinese celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on a full moon; in Judaism, the great feasts (Passover, Sukkot) coincide with the full moon of the corresponding month. The universal rule: when the Moon is full, something manifests, completes, illuminates.

In astrology, the full moon marks the culmination of the cycle that began two weeks before with the new moon. If the new moon is sowing (intention, beginning), the full moon is harvest: what you sowed shows itself, things are revealed, emotions intensify. It is a moment of manifestation, clarity and celebration.

Reported effects

The full moon is traditionally associated with increased births, sleep disturbances, emotional intensity, psychiatric episodes and changed animal behaviour. Modern science confirms some effects (more insomnia at full moon in controlled studies, slight alteration of the circadian rhythm) but not others. What is undeniable: at full moon the night is brighter, which affects melatonin, sleep cycles and, by extension, mood for many sensitive people.

In modern esoteric traditions (especially Wicca), the full moon is the phase of greatest magical power: the ideal time for manifestation rituals, offerings, charging crystals and ritual objects, energetic healing. Energy is considered to be at its peak and intentions formulated at this moment to have greater force.

How to make the most of it

Traditional recommendations: celebrate and give thanks for what was achieved in these two weeks, review your intentions from the new moon, release emotions that have been contained, do a simple ritual (write what you want to release and burn it, give thanks aloud, salt bath). It is not the time to start anything big — it is the time of review and manifestation. The next two weeks, until the next new moon, are waning moon: time to release.
