Midheaven
The Midheaven (MC, Medium Coeli in Latin) is the highest astrological point of the natal chart: the degree of the zodiac that passes through the meridian at the moment of birth, exactly above the place. It is the cusp of house X in the natal chart and represents the public vocation, the social role, the professional reputation and the deep aspirations.
Origin and meaning
The Midheaven is one of the four cardinal points of the natal chart along with the ascendant (East), the descendant (West) and the Imum Coeli or IC (lower depths, North). The MC-IC axis describes the polarity family roots / social vocation: the IC represents your ancestral home, your psychological foundation, your biological family; the MC represents what you build outwards, your contribution to the social world, your public reputation.
Astronomically, the MC is the highest point of the apparent path of the Sun on the day of your birth (where it would be at midday — but seen from your specific birthplace, projected into the zodiac). It is the most "exposed" point of the chart, what is most visible at the moment of incarnation. That is why it is read as the visible vocation that the soul has come to do.
Reading the MC
The sign of the MC describes the visible style of your professional and social vocation: MC in Aries — pioneer, leader, action vocation. MC in Taurus — practical, builder, creative for material results. MC in Gemini — communicator, writer, intermediary, varied vocation. MC in Cancer — caring, family, real estate, gastronomy. MC in Leo — public role, art, leadership with brilliance. MC in Virgo — analytical, perfectionist, healer or technician. MC in Libra — diplomat, justice, public relations. MC in Scorpio — psychologist, investigator, transformer, areas of deep change. MC in Sagittarius — teacher, philosopher, traveller, expander of horizons. MC in Capricorn — executive, traditional authority, builder of long term structures. MC in Aquarius — innovator, technologist, social reformer. MC in Pisces — artist, mystic, healer, social work.
Planets close to the MC or in house X are crucial for vocation. Planet ruling MC (planet that rules the sign on the cusp) describes the energy that gives life to your vocation. Aspects to the MC from other planets — especially personal — modulate how the vocation manifests. Hard aspects (squares, oppositions) indicate vocational conflicts to integrate; harmonic (trines, sextiles) indicate facilities.
Working with your vocation
For applying knowledge of your MC: 1) Identify your MC sign — it indicates the field of professional projection of the soul. 2) Look for professions or vocations that align with that energy. 3) Look at planets in house X — they enrich the vocational profile. 4) Look at the MC ruler — its sign and house indicate where the vocational energy "is" in your life. 5) Recognise that vocation is not always salaried profession — it can be how you live socially, your creative work, your role in your community. The MC is your authentic public face — recovering it is one of the most rewarding works of mid-life.
