Sun
In astrology, the Sun is the most important celestial body of the natal chart. It represents the conscious identity, the self that asserts, the essential vocation and the healthy ego. Its position in the zodiac at birth determines what we popularly call "your zodiac sign".
Astrological meaning
The Sun is the physical centre of the solar system and, in astrology, the symbolic centre of the natal chart. While the planets represent different psychic functions, the Sun represents the conscious self: the principle of individuation, that which asserts "I am". It is the inner hero, the conscious destiny, the light each person comes to bring to the world.
In esoteric traditions, the Sun is associated with alchemical gold (material perfection), with the arcanum XIX of the tarot (clarity, fullness), with the note Sol in musical-planetary correspondence, with the lion (Leo is its rulership sign), with Sunday (day of the Sun), with the heart in symbolic anatomy.
Your Sun in the natal chart
Your Sun is in one of the twelve zodiac signs: the sign where it was when you were born. That is what we popularly call "your sign". The Sun spends approximately one month in each sign, so millions of people share solar sign — but they are not identical, because their other planets are in unique positions. The Sun describes your central archetype; the other planets nuance it.
The Sun is also in one of the twelve astrological houses of your natal chart: the house describes the area of life where your solar identity expresses itself most strongly. Sun in House I = you express your self with personal presence. Sun in House VI = your identity links to service and work. Sun in House X = your vocation is public, professional. The house colours how your solar sign manifests in your concrete life.
Sun vs. Moon vs. Ascendant
The Sun is what you pursue and what you become when you live authentically: your deep vocation. The Moon is what you feel and need emotionally. The ascendant is what you show to the world. The solar-lunar-ascendant triad makes up 80% of the astrological portrait. In youth the ascendant dominates the public image; with maturity, the Sun manifests more fully.
