Cancer
Cancer is the fourth sign of the Western zodiac (21 June – 22 July), Water element and Cardinal modality, ruled by the Moon. Archetype of the caregiver, the mother, the home and emotional memory. Begins summer with the solstice.
Origin and etymology
The name Cancer is Latin and means "crab". Its founding myth comes from the second labour of Hercules: when the hero fought against the Hydra of Lerna, the goddess Hera sent a giant crab to bite his foot and obstruct the battle. Hercules crushed it, but Hera, grateful for its loyalty, placed the crab among the stars. The constellation is one of the faintest in the zodiac.
Cancer initiates the Northern Hemisphere summer with the solstice of 21 June, the longest day of the year. That is why it is the cardinal Water sign: it marks a beginning (a new solar quarter), but its nature is intimate, domestic, lunar — not expansive. The paradox resolves its character: Cancer takes initiative but inward, toward its own, toward home.
Cancerian archetype
Cancer is the archetype of the caregiver and home. It contributes deep emotional sensitivity, intense affective memory, family loyalty, the ability to nourish others. Like the crab — hard outside, soft inside — Cancerians protect their emotional world with a shell but feel everything intensely. Its opposite sign is Capricorn: if Cancer is the family self, Capricorn is the public self.
In shadow: Cancer can fall into excessive attachment, emotional dependence, affective manipulation or chronic melancholy. The Cancerian trap is to retain emotionally when life calls for letting go, or to live toward the past instead of the present. Its karmic lesson is to release what has fulfilled its cycle without denying the affection felt for it.
Cancer in your chart
If your Sun is in Cancer, your conscious identity seeks to care, build a home and create deep bonds. If your Moon is in Cancer (especially powerful, as the Moon rules Cancer), you are extraordinarily sensitive and live family with intensity. If your ascendant is Cancer, you give a first impression of a warm, reserved and receptive person.
