New moon
The new moon is the phase of the lunar cycle when the Moon is not visible from Earth: it is aligned between the Sun and our planet, with its illuminated face toward the Sun. Astronomically, it occurs when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction (0°). It is the start of the 29.5-day lunar cycle.
Origin and symbolism
In all ancient cultures, the new moon was the marker of the beginning of the month: the word "month" derives from "Moon" in many languages. The lunar calendar governed agriculture, fishing, religious rituals and great festivities. The Hebrew, Islamic, Chinese and many other years are based on lunations: each new month begins with the first visible Moon after the conjunction.
In astrology, the new moon marks the beginning of the emotional and energetic cycle: what is sown now will yield toward the full moon two weeks later. That is why it is the symbolic moment of planting seeds: new intentions, projects, habits, decisions. The darkness of the new moon represents pure potential, what is not yet manifest but is gestating.
The new moon in each sign
Each new moon occurs in a specific zodiac sign, and that colours its energy. New Moon in Aries: ideal for starting personal projects and physical exercise. In Taurus: for material matters, money, home. In Gemini: communication, writing, contacts. In Cancer: family, home, roots. In Leo: creativity, expression, romance. In Virgo: health, routines, organisation. And so on with the twelve signs. Each lunation's energy touches a different area of life.
In modern esoteric traditions, the new moon is the ideal phase for directional manifestation rituals: writing intentions for the cycle, visualising what you want to attract, committing to a new habit. The symbolic effectiveness lies in seizing the moment of lunar "rebirth" to plant consciousness.
How to make the most of it
Classic practice: on the night of the new moon, sit in silence, write 3-5 intentions for the 29-day cycle that begins, formulate them in the present and with affirmation ("I attract X", "I commit to Y"). In the two weeks until the full moon (waxing moon), act toward those intentions. At full moon, review what manifested. Constancy month after month in this ritual produces remarkable results, whether by magic or psychology — probably by both.
