Uranus
Uranus is the seventh planet of the solar system and, in modern astrology, ruler of Aquarius. It represents freedom, rebellion, innovation, sudden changes, genius and everything that breaks established structures. It is a slow transpersonal planet, generational marker.
Origin and discovery
Uranus was astronomically discovered in 1781 by William Herschel, a discovery that revolutionised astronomy: it was the first planet found beyond Saturn, expanding the known solar system for the first time in history. Its name comes from Uranus, primordial sky god of Greek mythology, father of Cronos (Saturn) and grandfather of the Olympian gods.
Astrologically, before its discovery Aquarius was ruled by Saturn. The symbolic synchronicity of the discovery is notable: Uranus was sighted in full Industrial Revolution and shortly before the French Revolution (1789). That is why astrologers associated it with freedom, revolution, technological innovation, rupture with tradition. Aquarius, sign of visionaries and reformers, found its modern ruler in Uranus.
What Uranus rules
Uranus represents everything that breaks the established order: sudden changes, revolutions, innovations, brilliant ideas, originality, independence, disruptive technology, scientific discoveries. It is the lightning that falls outside prediction, the definitive "yes" to freedom. Where it touches your chart, you experience unexpected changes and a vocation for originality.
In shadow: gratuitous rebellion, chronic instability, breaking everything just for the sake of breaking, commitment phobia, emotional coldness disguised as freedom, narcissism of the misunderstood. Uranus takes 84 years to traverse the zodiac — it spends 7 years in each sign, marking generational energies. Its transit over your chart produces the famous sudden changes at 28-29 years (along with Saturn) and at 41-42 years (the "midlife crisis" par excellence).
Uranus in your chart
Uranus describes generational energies due to its slowness: the personal is in its house and aspects. Uranus in House I = eccentric personality, distinctive physique. Uranus in House V = rupturist creativity, unexpected children. Uranus in House VII = unusual partners, sudden separations, attraction to the different. Its aspects to personal planets describe how freedom and rupture enter your life.
