Solar plexus chakra

The solar plexus chakra (Manipura in Sanskrit, "shining jewel") is the third of the seven main chakras, located in the upper abdomen, between the navel and the sternum. Its colour is yellow. It governs personal power, will, identity, self-esteem and the capacity for action.

Origin and meaning

Manipura derives from maṇi ("jewel") and pura ("city, citadel"): "the city of the shining jewel". It is the centre of the inner fire — the personal force, the will, the self-confidence. Its element is fire; its symbol is a ten-petalled lotus with a downward-pointing red triangle (fire) and the seed mantra RAM.

In anatomy, it corresponds to the solar plexus (autonomous nerve network) and the digestive organs (stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, spleen). Energetically it is the seat of the personal "I am" — the place where you feel your power and your capacity to act in the world. When it functions well, you feel "with the punch" to live.

Healthy and unbalanced functions

Healthy solar plexus: solid self-esteem without arrogance, clear personal power, capacity to set healthy boundaries, decision and constancy in your projects, good digestion, adequate metabolism, vital fire well calibrated, capacity to "say no" without guilt and "say yes" with conviction. The abdomen is alive but relaxed.

Imbalanced solar plexus: by deficiency = low self-esteem, doubt, pleasing tendency, victimhood, weak personality, slow digestion, lack of energy, abuse of others without resistance. By excess = aggressiveness, control over others, unbridled ambition, narcissistic ego, frequent anger, gastritis/ulcer, hyperactivity, abuse of personal power. Childhood traumas of humiliation, demanding parents, social rejection often affect this chakra.

How to balance it

Practices: cardio exercise that activates the centre (running, dancing, swimming), strengthening of the abdominal core, abdominal breathing (Ujjayi pranayama, Kapalabhati), sun bathing, contact with fire (candles, fire pits), yellow stones (yellow citrine, tiger eye, yellow topaz, yellow amber), yellow foods (banana, lemon, ginger, turmeric, sweet corn). Personal autonomy exercises: setting boundaries, daily decisions, taking responsibility. Mantra: chant RAM. Therapy if there is unworked trauma of humiliation or abuse of power.
