Origin and attribution

The attribution to Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570 – c. 495 BC) is legendary. Pythagoras and his school — the Pythagoreans — held that "all is number": the universe is governed by mathematical proportions, and numbers are sacred entities with their own quality, not just quantities. The "1" was for them not just the first number but the principle of unity; the "10" (the Tetraktys) was a fundamental sacred number.

Pythagorean numerology as practised today is a modern reconstruction, synthesised in the 19th-20th centuries by authors like Mrs L. Dow Balliett, Dr. Julia Seton and Florence Campbell. These pioneers combined Pythagorean traditions with Hebrew Kabbalah and Hermetic symbolism, fixing the letter-number correspondences that are now standard.

Numbers and their archetypes

Each number from 1 to 9 has a fixed archetypal quality. 1: leadership, individuality, beginning. 2: cooperation, duality, mediation. 3: expression, creativity, joy. 4: structure, discipline, construction. 5: change, freedom, exploration. 6: love, family, service. 7: knowledge, retreat, spirituality. 8: material power, ambition, prosperity. 9: humanitarianism, transcendence, closure.

Additionally, the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 do not reduce: they represent elevated vibrations with special challenges. Life path number (complete date of birth): vital path, essential mission. Personality number (consonants of the name): how others perceive you. Shadow number (specific calculation): unconscious patterns to integrate.
