Citrine
Citrine is the yellow-golden variety of quartz (silicon dioxide with iron impurities oxidised). In esoteric tradition is associated with the solar plexus chakra: stone of abundance, prosperity, joy, personal power, manifestation. Known popularly as "the merchant's stone" for its alleged powers of attracting business success.
Origin and types
The word "citrine" comes from the French citrin ("citrus"), referring to the yellow colour like a lemon. Its golden colour comes from traces of iron in the crystal structure. Natural citrine is relatively rare in nature (most natural deposits are pale, slightly yellowish); the commercial citrine sold today is generally amethyst or smoky quartz heated (heat treatment that transforms the violet or grey to yellow-orange). This is not "fake" — it is real quartz physically transformed; but the colour is not natural.
Major natural citrine deposits: Brazil, Madagascar, Russia, Spain (Galicia), USA. The very intense orange-yellow citrine ("Madeira citrine") is generally heat-treated; the gentle pale yellow tends to be more natural. For energetic-spiritual purposes, both work — although natural is preferred by purists.
Esoteric properties
In modern crystal therapy, citrine is considered: 1) Stone of abundance and prosperity par excellence. Use: place in cash register box of business, in wallet, in business altar; carry as ring or pendant during important business meetings. 2) Joy and optimism: dispels depression, lifts mood, activates the energy of grateful enjoyment of life. 3) Personal power: works directly on the solar plexus chakra — strengthens self-esteem, capacity to set healthy boundaries, healthy assertion. 4) Creativity and manifestation: helps materialise ideas in concrete reality.
5) Self-cleansing stone: unlike most stones (which need periodic cleansing), citrine has the unusual quality of not absorbing negative energies, transmuting them in golden light. Many crystal therapists use citrine to cleanse other stones simply by placing them in contact. 6) Mental clarity: dispels mental fog, helps with intellectual concentration. 7) Sun substitute: useful in cloudy regions or seasons of little sunlight (winter), brings the missing solar energy.
How to use it
1) Choose intuitively (let yourself attract by the specific stone — there is wisdom in the visceral attraction). 2) Cleanse on arrival (smoke, salt water briefly — citrine does not need much cleansing but it is still recommended initially). 3) Charge with intention: hold in hand, formulate clearly its purpose ("attract abundance to my business", "lift my mood", "give me power for this difficult conversation"). 4) Wear close to the body, especially in the area of the solar plexus (pendant on chest, carried in pocket, ring). 5) Avoid prolonged sun (loses colour with intense ultraviolet, especially heat-treated). 6) Reaffirm intention periodically through holding and conscious breathing.
