By your birth year in the Chinese calendar, which begins with Chinese New Year (between late January and mid-February depending on the year). If you were born in January or early February, it is worth verifying the exact date of Chinese New Year for that year, as you might belong to the previous year's animal.
Is it compatible with the Western horoscope?
Yes, they are complementary systems. The Western horoscope describes your personality by birth month (sun sign); the Chinese one, by year (animal). A person can be a Gemini–Tiger, an Aries–Rabbit, and so on. Each combination carries its own nuances. Many modern astrologers integrate both systems for more complete portraits.
Does animal compatibility work?
In Chinese tradition, yes. There are harmonious triads of animals that get along well (Rat–Dragon–Monkey, for example) and conflictive pairings (Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat).
