Cleromancy is the art of divining the future with dice. Roll the dice and discover the messages hidden in the numbers.

Dice divination (dadomancy, also called cleromancy or astragalomancy in its ancient Greek form) is the art of reading the future through the casting of dice. Practised by Greeks, Romans, Vikings, Mongols and virtually every culture that had dice, it is one of the oldest forms of oracular consultation. Three dice, one question, one sum with precise meaning. This app delivers your reading according to classical tradition.

What is Dice Divination?

The dice of dadomancy have ancient and multicultural origins. The Romans called them tesserae and cast them before battles and important decisions. The Greeks used astragaloi (sheep ankle bones — the first dice in human history). The Chinese had systems using six dice; the Vikings used three; the Norse sometimes carved their dice with runes to combine two oracular systems.

The most commonly used technique in the West is the casting of three dice onto a circle drawn on the ground (or on a dedicated cloth). Dice that fall inside the circle count; those outside do not. The sum of the three gives a number from 3 to 18, each with a precise meaning inherited from tradition. This app simulates that casting.

The Meaning of Each Sum

3: a happy surprise, a gift from destiny. 4: a minor setback — stop pressing on that matter. 5: a project comes to fruition, news arrives. 6: some losses ahead, exercise caution. 7: gossip, comments, slander.

8: criticism from others, tread carefully. 9: marriage or union, good luck in love. 10: birth or rebirth, professional success. 11: temporary separation, a journey. 12: an important written message. 13: tears and hardship, a difficult time. 14: a new friend, unexpected help. 15: beware of problems and intrigues. 16: a happy journey, a good moment. 17: a change of plans arriving from abroad. 18: the best possible luck, success in everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why three dice specifically?
The tradition of three dice likely stems from the symbolism of the number 3 in many cultures (Trinity, triple goddess, the three planes: physical-mental-spiritual). There is also a practical reason: three six-sided dice yield 16 possible sums (3–18), providing enough variety for a nuanced reading without becoming unmanageable. Other traditions use two or four dice, each with its own interpretive table.
Does it work for any question?
Dice divination works best with concrete, short-term questions: "what energy surrounds this week?", "is a trip coming?", "will the interview go well?" It is less suited for deep introspection — for that, use tarot. It is very direct, almost like a personal horoscope for the present moment.
Why don't dice that fall outside the circle count?
In classical tradition, dice that escape the circle are seen as "distractions from the oracle": information not arriving from the right plane, noise, interference from unwanted forces. If all three dice fall outside the circle, it is a sign that you should not consult right now — try again later.
Can I use physical dice instead of the app?
Absolutely. If you have three six-sided dice, draw a circle about 30 cm across on a smooth surface. Concentrate on your question, shake the dice in your left hand, cast them toward the centre of the circle, add up those that land inside and consult the table. The app simulates this process for greater accessibility.
