Pisces

Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the Western zodiac (19 February – 20 March), Water element and Mutable modality, traditionally ruled by Jupiter and modernly by Neptune. Archetype of the mystic, dreamer, universal empath and soul that dissolves into the whole.

Origin and etymology

The name Pisces is Latin and means "fish" (plural). Its Greek myth is that of Aphrodite and Eros: when fleeing the monster Typhon, both transformed into fish and tied themselves by the tail with a rope so as not to separate in the waters. That image — two fish tied by the tail, swimming in opposite directions — is the astrological symbol of Pisces. It represents the duality of a soul that is at once spiritual and worldly, dreamy and carnal.

Pisces closes the zodiac with the end of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, time of year when nature prepares to be reborn but does not yet manifest. That is why it is the sign of the dissolution of borders, of the mixture of old and new, of fertile waiting. Its element is mutable Water: emotion that flows without containment, without fixed form.

Piscean archetype

Pisces is the archetype of the mystic, intuitive artist and soul that dissolves boundaries. It contributes oceanic empathy, imaginative ability, spiritual sensitivity, connection with the collective unconscious, artistic talent, universal compassion. It is the most receptive sign of the zodiac. Its opposite sign is Virgo: if Virgo distinguishes, orders and perfects details, Pisces dissolves, integrates and embraces the whole.

In shadow: Pisces can fall into evasion, addictive fantasy, dispersion, victimhood, blurred emotional boundaries, escape through substances. The Piscean trap is to flee the world rather than inhabit it from its sensitivity. Its karmic lesson is to incarnate: to bring spirituality and dream to the body and the everyday, without losing magic but without escaping reality.

Pisces in your chart

If your Sun is in Pisces, your conscious identity seeks to transcend the self, connect with the invisible, heal others with your sensitivity. If your Moon is in Pisces, your emotional world is vast and absorbs that of others — you need conscious emotional filters. If your ascendant is Pisces, you give a first impression of a soft, dreamy person, hard to define.
